Renters insurance, peril by peril

An HO-4 policy is short. Most of the confusion comes from three structures inside it: the perils insured against, the exclusions, and the special limits.

Compiled from filed policy formsSources cited on every pageUpdated 2026-11-03

Here is the shape of the form before you read any single answer: the policy covers listed perils, then removes a list of causes, then caps certain categories. An answer that stops at "covered" or "not covered" is missing two of the three.

The three structures that decide every answer

StructureWhat it doesWhere people go wrong
Perils insured againstLists what is covered — fire, wind, accidental discharge of water from a pipe or applianceAssumes the list is exhaustive. Endorsements can add perils.
ExclusionsRemoves causes — flood, earth movement, neglect, power interruptionStops reading before the carve-back sentence at the end of the exclusion.
Special limitsCaps categories — money, jewelry, silverware, business propertyAssumes the personal property limit applies to everything equally.
